Abstract

Bernadine Healy (1944-2011) was a cardiologist who served as the first female director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) between 1991 and 1993. In addition to her work at Johns Hopkins University and the Cleveland Clinic, she also served as CEO of the American Red Cross and President of the American Heart Association. She is well-known for her work helping to establish equality for women in health policy and research, notably establishing the Women's Health Initiative at NIH.

Correspondence between Witkop and Abraham Patchornik, research chemist (organic chemistry) at the Weizmann Institute of Science (Reovoth, Israel ) and colleague of Witkop at NIAMD. 2 boxes of reprints, chronologically arranged. Also letters and photos of his Japanese students from the NIH Visiting Scholars Program he helped establish. Biographical essays he wrote about Paul Ehrlich and Percy Julian.

Dr. Bertram S. Brown was a key figure in the national effort to redefine and expand mental health services during the 1960s and 1970s. Dr. Brown's distinguished federal career at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) helped shape many of the decisions which led to these changes. His tenure at NIMH culminated in his appointment as the Director of the National Institute of Mental Health in 1970.
